Album Review: Gorgonchrist – Fish In A Mountain (Self Released)

Formed by ex-members of Shadowflag, Voltane and Lord Misery, Gorgonchrist are a new band with a wealth of skills and experience to draw upon. Delivering an incendiary concoction of crust punk, black metal and grindcore – laced with black humour and absolute irreverence. Their debut album ‘Fish in A Mountain’ will be released on March 10th, 2023.

You might not know whether to laugh or cry upon hearing the absolute bevy of filth that Gorgonchrist have to offer here. The absurd combination of blackened metal, crust punk, sludge, and grind is certainly ear-catching. It’s also well worth mentioning that Gorgonchrist deserve a ton of credit for making the combination sound listenable.

That being said, it’s not an easy thing to swallow, liable to get stuck in the throat on its way down, resulting in you choking to death.

Now, Gorgonchrist aren’t taking themselves too seriously here, with tracks like Pedos Have Small Hands and Lonely Wanker, how could they? So, it’s important to keep that in mind when letting the wave of filth wash over you. However, that doesn’t mean they’re a comedy band with little to offer. In fact, there are many times where the album really comes to life and the structure gets the neck muscles moving.

The raw and ruthless noise at its absolute best with tracks like Abduction by Candlelight, The Coldness of Night, and the title track. Before you even realise it, you’re on board with the frenzied insanity of Gorgonchrist.

It’s a difficult album to recommend because it is what your grandparents would call ‘just noise’. Even though it’s got a lot more nuances and detail throughout.

Lovable? Kind of. Likeable? Certainly. Fun for the whole family? Why the f**k not!?
