Album Review: God Shaped Devil – Dark Fields (Self Released)

Fronted by Vocalist and Lead Guitarist Bécy Füzéri (Bex); Matt Morris on Rhythm Guitar; Lajos Borsi Bass/Vocals and Luke Ellwood on Drums. God Shaped Devil describe their sound as an explosive combination of thrash, melodic death metal and groove metal brought together with their own artistic flair.

Though both Hungarian Bex and Lajos didn’t know each other before migrating to England from Hungary; they met through work years later. After finding similar motives they formed what would eventually become ‘GSD’. Luke joined the band after seeing an advertisement online. Forming in 2014 the band immediately started writing a number of songs which lead to the self-production and self-release of their EP Creator of Sodom in late 2015.

After playing numerous shows around the Manchester area and becoming a popular band within the underground scene in the city, they began writing new material for a full length album. During the writing process the bands’ sound had evolved, sparking a change within the line up; in 2017 Bex became Frontman/Lead Guitarist and Matt joined as Rhythm Guitarist.

Three singles were released with lyric/music videos; Barbed Wire, Deadly Sign and Drowning Gravity leading up to the much anticipated release of their debut full length album ‘Dark Fields’ in July 2019.

Turn the volume up, the only way to listen to Dark Fields is with the volume at its highest. Who cares if it disturbs the neighbours, scares the pets or blows out the windows. God Shaped Devil play very hard, fast and very heavy.

The epitome of a metal band, the groove of the opening firing ferocity of Guiding Light is only bettered by the head-banger that follows in Drowning Gravity. The beast of the riffs are one thing, the intensity of the drums another but the growling and roaring vocals are on another level.

At only eight tracks long, it seems like a short album but is actually the perfect length as the constant speed and in your face approach could wear thin if it was too long. By keeping things tight and concise, God Shaped Devil end up delivering a blistering and memorable performance. Seriously, Barbed Wire is such a banger. The guitar chug and roars at the end is all class.

Absolutely no complaints to be made here, Dark Fields is the gift that keeps on giving all the way up to the thrashy finale of the title track.
