Album Review: Ghastly – Mercurial Passages (20 Buck Spin)
Ghastly return anew from the limitless wellspring of incomprehensible obscurity and dark inspiration that is Finland with its third album of mind-altering nightmare visions, “Mercurial Passages”. Due for release on May 28th, 2021 via 20 Buck Spin.
Ghastly and nasty black metal, Mercurial Passages is the stuff that assaults your mind in the deepest and darkest of nights. Forcing you to sit up straight, heart pounding and body slick with sweat. Head swimming with fading memories of what was just experienced, a quiet sob escapes. Relief that you’re safe washes over, until a glance to the side reveals that Ghastly are waiting. The CD that caused such a tumultuous night, waiting and ready to be played again. You know you shouldn’t but something dark is calling, something you just can’t say no too.
The horror wants to be free and the only way to release it, is to play it. This is Mercurial Passages and it is evil from before time was even a thing.
Ghastly have delivered something exceptionally strong from the realm of black metal here. An album that feels like the sonic version of physical oppression. The weight of all Ghastly’s might pressing down until things crack, split and snap. Sometimes it comes thickly (Ouroborus, Sea of Light), sometimes dripping in gothic vibes (Out of the Psychic Blue), sometimes fast and furiously (Perdition, Parasites) and sometimes epically bleak and harsh (Dawnless Dreams, Mirror Horizon).
No matter what comes your way, there’s no ignoring it. One of the most captivating black metal releases of 2021.
