Album Review: Future Static – Liminality (Wild Thing Records)

One of Australia’s most talked about breakthrough heavy acts, Melbourne quintet Future Static will unleash their highly anticipated full-length debut album, ‘Liminality’, on November 24th, 2023, via Wild Thing Records.

Long-awaited and much anticipated, Future Static have been wowing listeners around the world with their meticulous fusion of manic metalcore, pummelling progressive intensity, and anthemic alt-rock. Single after single has only increased their standing, and now, this debut full-length is here to put the stamp on an impressive few years for the band.

Beginning with Chemical Lobotomy, listeners are immediately treated to the impressive combination that Future Static do so well. A track that has energy and heaviness, but thanks to the vocals, has a powerful pop twist too. It’s this punchy and powerful blend of alternative ideas and raucous metal that makes the following Venenosa such an unforgettable listen as well. Where scathing sounding instrumentation meets soaring vocal power and guttural growls. A track that is filled with frenzied energy, downright dangerous sounding at times and with a chorus that can simply be called immense.

Although that is a bit ‘par for the course’ as Future Static have packed this release with heavy anthems and the next might be the album’s best.

Called Roach Queen, what listeners get here is a hectic and heavy number, with some seriously anthemic appeal. Melody is wonderfully balanced with frenetic aggression, it has some wicked twists and turns, and an absolute beast of a breakdown.

The bar has been well and truly set, yet this being a band on such a constant creative high, it doesn’t phase Future Static one bit. Delivering even more infectious hits with Icarus and …And The Walls That Were Built. Before Waves’ fast-paced rhythm washes over. Showcasing metal catchiness and another powerful chorus, but with fascinating complexities amongst the washed-up dregs.

Luke Taylor of Heartline then joins the band for one of their more straight-forward and metallic-hardcore-infused efforts, Iliad. Where any questions about how intense Future Static can be, are well and truly put to bed. Although, such questions would be absurd, as even when melody is at their core, such as on Will I?, this band exudes intensity.

Delivering the perfect contrast of heaviness and melody, The Hourglass finds Future Static going extremely hard when the time calls for it, but also hitting melodic highs that are downright inspiring. Which makes the heartfelt Halfway Across the World all the more impactful. Before Sean Harmanis of Make Them Suffer helps cause some carnage with the frenzied modern anthem that is Plated Gold. Then it’s The Embers, the finale, and one last big slab of delightful Future Static noise that proves once and for all that this band are an unstoppable force in metal.

Putting it simply, Liminality is just going to make this band even bigger.
