Album Review: From The Depth – Moments (Rockshots Records)

Punchy and aggressive, fans who have been waiting since 2014’s EP “Perseverance”, are now rewarded with From The Depth‘s new 10 track album. Entitled “Moments”, the full length is a series of personal occasions in the band members’ lives that they are reliving through their music, from hard times to the anniversary of the group forming. In the band’s own words:

‘Moments’ is a way to celebrate relevant memories and episodes of everyday life while time passes by. Each aspect of the production has been taken care of with extreme attention to detail from song structure to the final master; nothing has been left to chance and we did our best to get out the most from each session during songwriting.

After years of hard times, they are now fully operational with a killer stable lineup, and with the new partnership with Rockshots Records, From the Depth is ready to show fans what they have been working on. Starting as a power metal cover band with a distinct “melodic mindset”, From The Depth has come a long way since 2008, and the maturity and refinement really show in this new chapter. Moments is out on August 28th 2020.

Blood-pumping and head-thumping power metal is what From the Depth deal out and their hand is very, very strong. Kicking off with the commanding energy of Immortal and Spread Your Fire, the pace is fast and the tempo is hot. Exactly as it should be.

The riffs roar like ancient dragons, the drums pound away like golems working deep underground, the bass thrums with unexplainable life and the vocals soar like a phoenix from the flames. The latter’s melodic drops are particularly interesting as it allows the band to burst into life over and over again.

Things finally slow down (just a bit) for the epic thunder of Ten Years. The mellow outro is the perfect set up for the more relaxed and melody driven Streets of Memory. The infusion of guitar chug doesn’t detract from the richness and when it does ‘heat’ up, it just increases in influence.

Hypnos is an intermission filled with gothic splendour and is darkly pretty before Forget and Survive reanimates the deeper metal rhythm for a proper head-banger. Although it totally pales in comparison to the lavish and elegant epic that follows in Just Ice.

The longest track on the album by a considerable amount, it’s From the Depth’s truly extending their musical palette and showing us just how tasty their power metal can be. Clever, catchy, interesting and so very detailed, it’s a modern power metal classic.

Following that is no easy task but From the Depth just go for it with a folkish burst of energy and hard-hitting riffs on Missed. An infusion of carny-like melodies and old-school metal with A Matter of Time and an epic ballad as the closer with Somewhere.
