Album Review: Florence Black – Bed of Nails (Self Released)
Rising rock trio Florence Black will release their highly anticipated second album ‘Bed of Nails’ on February 2nd, 2024.
Highly anticipated because Florence Black know exactly how to deliver thrilling anthemic rock that has plenty of head-banging groove, while also being unarguably accessible. Something that is on full display with Bed of Nails and the twelve bangers they have to show here.
Starting things off hot and groovy with the infectious Start Again, the riffy Don’t hold Me Down, and the melodic grandeur of the title track. Each showcasing the size of Florence Black’s sound, the choruses they nail with such simplicity, and just how infectious every single part of the band is. Impressive, considering they are a three-piece.
The pace is back with force on the vigorous Taxman, Florence Black expelling a ton of energy here, and capping it off with a grin-inducing guitar solo. Followed then by Look Up, a track that is a bit slower, a bit moodier, and with just a hint of grunge rock to it. Before Warning Sign takes listeners up to the halfway point with an emphatic showcase of melodic rock and a hearty chorus.
Still enjoying yourself? Of course, you are. It’s Florence Black and the guarantee that the latter half of the album will continue to deliver is assured. Especially when it begins with such aplomb as it does with Beautiful Lover and The Way Home. The band’s ability to deliver exciting levels of raucous rock and moving melodies is still right at the forefront. Mainly because Florence Black don’t seem to know how to do anything but.
Case in point, the heavy riffing of Solid 9, groovy vitality of Rockin’ Ring (featuring one of the album’s best solos), and the heartfelt singalong sound of The Forest. Here, you get the whole smorgasbord of Florence Black, and then some.
Right up to the very end, it stays a dynamic record, ending with arguably their most melodic track of all in Back to the End. A track that fans are going to simply love. Although that could certainly apply to most of the album as Bed of Nails is a crowd-pleaser through and through.
