Album Review: Feral Lord – Vires In Absoluto (wilt-shine/Geistraum Records)
The duo known as Feral Lord return with a new album of avant-garde blackened metal. Called ‘Vires in Absoluto’, this new tome will be released on May 6th, 2022 through wilt-shine and Geistraum Records.
Aiming to unseat the mind with an unusual combination of off-kilter acoustic melodies and explosive, fiery, harsh metal. Feral Lord certainly aren’t your ‘run of the mill’ black metal band.
Almost all expectations and pre-conceived notions are thrown away in an instant with the title track’s first couple of minutes. Even when it does transition into the more familiar harsh style, it is such a cacophony of noise, it’s hard to keep up.
Calling Vires in Absoluto an avant-garde experience might be an understatement and, regardless of the black metal expulsions, it is what the mind focuses on. Feral Lord make the experience as eclectic as possible, at the beginning, at the end and even midway, as Inversions of Truth shows.
An array of ideas, tracks that can go as long as near nine-minutes (The Cold Embrace of Abyssal Entities) and a constant confrontational feel, means this is an album that does stand out.
Is it enjoyable though? That’s going to depend on what you’re looking for and what your current mood is. It’s a challenging effort and that does mean it’s going to be divisive. Fans of the harshest and most discordant metal will find solace in what Feral Lord have accomplished here.
