Album Review: Fell Ruin – Cast in Oil The Dressed Wrought (Tartarus Records/Death Psalm Records)

The shape tapered as it pillared the skies. Lanterns hung from the shine. Seduce at the center of a fire.

Since its conception in 2014, Fell Ruin has been an ever-evolving metal soundscape of dark, cathartic storytelling. After self-releasing the debut EP “Devices” (2015) and conspiring with I, Voidhanger Records and Graven Earth Records on the full-length “To the Concrete Drifts” (2017), the band now returns with a new full-length album and third venture “Cast in Oil the Dressed Wrought”. It will be released in collaboration with Tartarus Records (Vinyl/Cassette/ Digital) and Death Psalm Records (CD) on November 11th, 2022.

All about blackened metal epics with a melancholic vein running throughout, Fell Ruin embody the darkness and proudly display their dark story-telling abilities throughout this new album. Their goal of removing you from your reality to theirs is effectively done throughout and the sense of the wandering, lost and alone, is ever present.

That feeling of impending doom? The building cacophony of approaching noise? The ever-growing revulsion in the back of the throat? All caused by this six-track album, as Fell Ruin deliver a blend of chaotic rawness, doomy intensity, screeching ferocity and melodic interludes. Taking the listener on a journey with many unexpected twists and turns.

It’s a lot to take in as Fell Ruin move through the gears smoothly and effectively but it’s also fascinatingly abrasive. The battering of the drums, that is particularly rough on the mind. Yet, it’s the combination of Fell Ruin’s instruments and vocals that makes the metal tornado so turbulent. Even the melancholic melodies have a strong sense of chaos to them. The calm before the storm.

Darkness is falling. The gloom is thick. The light that Fell Ruin offers is not to be trusted. Only more darkness awaits.
