Album Review: Féleth – Depravity (DeadPop Records)

From the small northern Norwegian town of Alta, far above the Arctic circle, there’s a rumbling of brutality shaking the earth from a young, dynamic metal quintet known as Féleth.

Creating heavy, melodic assaults, that transcends the traditional limits of the genre, these great northern Norwegians, are taking their influences of death metal, thrash, deathcore, rock and even elements of Jazz to unleash to the world their debut album “Depravity” due out via DeadPop Records on May 22, 2020.

With a melting pot of ideas, yet rooted in delivering a head-smashing and neck-destroying style of metal, Féleth are aggressive newcomers to a scene that constantly looks to surprise. Here that comes in the form of just how much groove and catchiness there is to Féleth’s debut offering. It’s a very easy album to get drawn into and find yourself head-banging too instinctively. Especially when they kick it off with such a heavyweight track as Ember.

If your heads not in pieces, then prepare for more with the savage riff/drum combo of Hollow Words and ruthless stomping groove of Ravenous. Backed up by a fiery vocal performance that pushes the radiant heavy message to the forefront.

If there’s one thing that is consistent throughout Depravity, it is simply how hard and heavy Féleth go at it. Just when you think they can’t pulverise the mind anymore, along comes Arise and Dissolution to take the extreme sound to an extra stage.

Not done with the thrashing yet, Féleth bring an undercurrent of darkness with Pestilence and expand on the riffs with Pale Tongue. The latter, one of the more challenging tracks with these senseless bursts of speed. It’s fitting that Swan Song closes out the album with a thrilling showcase of rhythmic heaviness, brutality and head-banging groove.

A raging eruption of noise, there are very few moments of levity throughout Depravity and few will want them. Féleth deliver heavy and extreme noise so very well.
