Album Review: Fall of Carthage – Emma Green (MDD Records)
The wildness that Fall of Carthage exude is one that mixes familiar sounding death metal with hardcore topped off with a sprinkling of nu-metal style breakdowns and beats. Emma Green is their new album due out on April 6th, 2018 via MDD Records.
The latter of the three is an interesting one seeing as it’s often considered a dirty style of music but when done right it can really add a lot to a bands sound provided they’re not reliant on the constant breakdowns. Fall of Carthage manage this, delivering punchy metal tracks that asks one thing of you, bang your head as hard as possible.
Signs of Corruption and Priceless starts things off so well, the latter of the two having both a memorable chorus and hefty breakdowns. Heavy, fast & groovy as hell. These are the kind of tracks that get people moving.
What isn’t is the bland Superior, a track that is far too familiar & not in a good way. No nostalgia kicks here, just bad memories. It’s odd because it does show occasional imagination within the guitars, something that increases with the melodic but effective Down There.
Then there is the excellent Emma Green, a thumping piece of metal aggression. There is a meanness about Fall of Carthage’s efforts here driven by the growling vocal style and meaty drumming.
When they nail it, they really nail it but every so often it slips into a more bland and mediocre effort. Lies in Your Cup loses momentum near the end and the likes of F.A Gov are forgettable at best.
The highlight of the album comes in the form of the hardcore heavy Belongings. The groove and injections of pace really making you want to dive into the nearest circle pit.
Overall just a bit too hit and miss to really leave any long term impression. There is good music in Emma Green and thankfully it does overshadow the more disappointing stuff.
