Album Review: Evil Brain Taste – Number Two (Self Released)

Evil Brain Taste have been defiling eardrums with their infectious brand of thrash/death metal since 2014. Veering between serious social commentary, puerile toilet humour and B-movie worship, from breakneck thrash to pummelling death metal, their music is shot through with black humour and anarchic enthusiasm. Their second full-length album ‘Number Two’ is released May 22th 2023!

Credit where credit is due, Evil Brain Taste have somehow made the sound of uncouth thrash and garish death anthemic. With themes that are right up our street (horror films, video games, the supernatural, the dark surreal aspects of the modern world) and their tongues jammed in their cheeks, Number Two would have to be pretty poor to not impress.

Which, happily, is so far from the case. Number Two is an infantile, energetic, twisted, and thoroughly enjoyable blast of heavy. Featuring twelve tracks of nasty and hyperactive noise, you’ll circle-pit until you can’t breathe and head-bang until you’re vomiting up blood.

There can’t be any higher praise than that.

It’s all fun and games, in a horrifying way, but the abilities of this band can’t be ignored as it really does take some talent to make such heavy brutality so listenable. It probably won’t surprise to many people to learn that Evil Brain Taste come out all guns blazing from the start and don’t take their foot of the gas for even a second. This isn’t speed metal, it’s speed fucking metal.

Yet, it’s not lazy speed and forced heaviness that lasts two minutes and everything sounds the same. Evil Brain Taste have strong song-writing chops, know how to differentiate between styles, offer variety in heavy sounds, and keep the listener engaged right up to the very end.

They’ll make your eyes water, your ears ache, your brain melt, and your sphincter tighten. How could you not want to experience Number Two based off that?
