Album Review: Entropy – Liminal (Crazyzane Records)

Entropy initially started out as a bedroom project but soon developed into a full-fledged band devoted to fusing heavier post-hardcore sounds and indie and shoegaze elements. Their debut album, Liminal will be released on August 21st 2020 via Crazysane Records.

A bit slow off the mark, Entropy don’t exactly wow with the initial rock flurry of Terminal (adj.). However, that snap judgement is flawed as the band begin to showcase a very memorable and feel-good style of post and indie rock. A track that is every bit the grower you could hope it to be.

Slower and grubbier, The Enemy Doesn’t Sleep and Northern Line up the value of Entropy’s shoegaze credentials. Both thoughtful and insightful pieces of music. So naturally the next step is to bring out something super-poppy, right?

If that made you scratch your head, you’re not alone. Age of Anxiety is quite an about-turn and even when the guitars get a little meatier it retains a serious light and airy style. It’s different, that much can be said.

If that turned you off, rest assured Entropy are back on it with the overdramatic riffs of February 20, 1974. Before bringing some good energy with Stuttering Days and General System Theory.

Constantly shifting, the sullen pace of Knausgardian keeps a nice balance between the peppiness and moodiness of the full album. That former liveliness, front and centre for Balancing the Edges before Entropy close out their unique offering with a truly emotive finish (A Dying Animal).

It’s can be hit & miss at times but overall, Liminal is an attractive and varied slice of modern rock filtered through many sub-genres.
