Album Review: Egor Lappo – Abandoned Corners (Self Released)
Abandoned Corners is the fifth album from prolific Russian solo artist Egor Lappo. The album’s title is a reference to its more introspective nature in comparison to Lappo’s recent albums (the sci-fi themed Trancevoicer and phobia-centric Naturealism). Abandoned Corners will be released on May 16th, 2023.
An inspired and talented solo artist, Egor Lappo leans more into pop-rock and prog-rock territories with this new album. Delivering a grin-inducing AOR-inspired body-mover with the opening track Neverending Storm. An extremely catchy way to start off this eclectic release.
Eclectic because Egor then brings out a synth-pop tone with My World on Pause and pretty keyboard melody with New Lines, allowing his dreamy vocals to ease the mind, while still showcasing memorable catchiness with the melodies.
The synth is the major focus of Last of Her Kind, Egor giving this track a moodier and old-school vibe. Whereas Move On is a really infectious soft-rock ballad with a strong guitar solo, and Engraved on My Heart is an absurdly dramatic instrumental that has stunning soundtrack qualities to it. This middle portion of the album houses some of the album’s best tracks, that’s for sure.
The synth poppiness is back with aplomb on the more energised Creature Comforts, the chorus is killer here. Followed then by believable emotion and mood-altering melody with Out of Touch, inspired sparkling prettiness with Monochrome, and the grand melodrama of No Cloud. A really strong set of tracks to wrap up this album.
An album that is for those who enjoy the lighter side of rock, blended heavily with pop and synth, but has enough imagination to grab the attentions of a wide array of people.
