Album Review: Dynfari – Myrkurs er þörf (Code666)
Dynfari from Iceland plays black metal influenced, heavily atmospheric music. Myrkurs er þörf is their fifth album out on September 18th via Code666. Having explored more progressive soundscapes in their blend of post-rock and black metal in their most recent works, this album marks a return to more DIY, punch and attitude. An introspection on thoughts of suicide and self-destruction, the essence of bleakness and suffering defeat from the shackles of your own mind, the album’s direction is toward a darker, heavier side of the musical spectrum, expressing a violent refusal of merely becoming a means to an end.
To say Dynfari deliver thought-provoking music is something of an understatement and to sum Myrkurs er þörf up as a mix of black and atmospheric metal fails to do it justice. Even though both are completely true.
This is not our first experience with Dynfari. Their 2017 release ‘The Four Doors of the Mind’ scored a whopping 9.5/10 and was in the top 25 albums of that year. So there are some hefty expectations, yet Dynfari have no problem smashing them and making Myrkurs er þörf another album of the year contender.
Dripping in melancholic darkness, moody and affecting atmosphere, troubling bleakness and punchy, black metal rawness. Myrkurs er þörf is as grand and as subtle as you might hope it to be. Nothing is rushed, nothing is forced and most importantly, nothing is wasted.
Make sure you’re emotionally prepared for this as Dynfari will put you through the wringer. Yet, it’s an experience worth having and one that will last well beyond the boundaries of the 8 tracks Myrkurs er þörf has to offer.
