Album Review: Dust Prophet – One Last Look Upon The Sky (Self Released)
Stoner and doom metal trio Dust Prophet are preparing to unleash their new album, One Last Look Upon the Sky on January 27th, 2023.
The band comments:
One Last Look Upon the Sky is a huge milestone for us. It’s taken us 4 years to get to this point, and we had a lot of sidesteps and roadblocks along the way. There were times we weren’t sure we would ever make it to this point, and now, finally here we are! Releasing this album is a huge moment for us as a band- it represents all our hard work and the sacrifice each one of us made to bring this project to fruition.
We’re incredibly proud of the songs we’ve written and recorded. All three of us and our various influences are represented equally in the compositions. That is an aspect we really want to explore further and develop as we move forward with newer written material.
Gargantuan stuff from Dust Prophet here. The work they put into this new album is clear and will resonate with all fans of doom and stoner heaviness.
The light melody and touch of ominous vibes that comes from the intro of A Storm of Time & Space Part 1 sets the scene. Yet, it offers scant preparation for the heady and brash explosion of noise that comes from When the Axe Falls. The fuzzy guitar rhythm, crunchy percussion, powerful mix of vocals, and moody melodies, is immediately addictive. A bit grubby, a bit eccentric, but a whole lot of brilliance in one track.
Dust Prophet sunk the teeth in with that monster of a track and with Dear Mrs. Budd and Song 4, they really start to chew. The former alternates between devilish heaviness, fuzzy groove, and morose melody. Whereas the latter is a deep, dark, and doomy instrumental. Lovable as all hell though.
It’s a shorter slice of wild and groovy noise with Put to the Question, the vocals returning here, in style. Yet this is also one of the more eccentric tracks on the album as Dust Prophet switch the tone in unexpected fashion.
Following that, The High Capital takes us on an extensive and detailed journey. One that begins with echoing melody, transitions into chuggy rhythm and empathetic vocals, before becoming more progressive and challenging. A bit of an epic, especially regarding how it moves through the stages.
It’s intermission time as A Storm of Time & Space Part 2 gives a moment of airiness and relaxation. Take it, as what follows are two of the album’s biggest and brilliant offerings. First, Hourglass, a track that moves at a slower tempo, but delivers chunky groove and punchy vocals. Then, Bury Me Before Noon, which is tinged with moody psychedelia and hits with all the mighty power of Dust Prophet’s doom and stoner blend.
One Last Look Upon the Sky is a massive release and Dust Prophet have undeniably thrown their all into it. It pays off.
