Album Review: Draugr – Hymns of Temptation (Self Released)

Draugr is a 4-piece orchestral melodic death metal band from East Sussex and Hertfordshire.

Their album ‘Hymns of Temptation’ is out now and sees the musical direction push in the direction of bands such as Wintersun, Septicflesh and Kalmah combining fast pace death metal with epic and massive arrays of orchestras and synths.

With an array of fast paced hyper-active metal tunes backed up with impressive symphonic elements, Draugr certainly have used the four years it took to write this album well. The eight tracks that make up this impressive release are imaginative, interesting, often exciting and very listenable.

With bucketloads of heavy-ass riffs, seeping and oozing wounds of synth, highs and lows of wickedly strong orchestrations and a constantly evolving sound. Hymns of Temptation is energetic and thrilling music. Each track offering something a little different ensuring there is no critiquing the album for lack of inventiveness.

There are many highlights but it’s Path to the Sky, Hymn of Temptation and Wither Away that stand out that little bit more. On an album that is not in short supply of quality.
