Album Review: Diskord – Degenerations (Transcending Obscurity Records)

Eccentric Norwegian death metal band Diskord have made quite a reputation for themselves over the years for playing some twisted, unhinged death metal that takes the best elements of old school death metal, dissonant death metal, technical death metal, even progressive and jazz music, and then some.

Seven years in the making, ‘Degenerations’ is out on August 13th, 2021 via Transcending Obscurity Records.

Lunacy. This is what we have here. The musical equivalent of madness. Diskord seem to have one singular goal and it is to leave you mentally wrecked. After 12 tracks of this insanity, that can be at best described as cacophonous technical death metal with added extras, most will have crumbled.

Enjoyable? Well, that might not be the right word to use. It is and isn’t. This level of uncontrollable and manic instrumentation is admirable, even more so when it results into something that actually has structure. However, it’s near-impossible to keep up with anything here. One minute you’re head-banging to some meaty death metal rhythm and then suddenly a discordant burst of something completely different arrives to throw you completely off.

What you can certainly call this album is challenging and if you feel up to it, you really must check it out. Even if it’s just to admire the insanity that exudes from every pore of this band. There is no denying just how talented they are, it’s just if you find their mental expulsions to your liking.
