Album Review: Din of Celestial Birds – The Night Is for Dreamers (A Cheery Wave Records / A Thousand Arms Music)

Leeds, UK based instrumental cinematic post-rockers Din of Celestial Birds will unleash their much-anticipated debut full length album ‘The Night Is for Dreamers’ on August 11th, 2023. The album will come on Vinyl, CD, and digital formats through A Cheery Wave Records (UK) and A Thousand Arms Music (USA).

There’s a lot about Din of Celestial Birds that makes their dynamic sound so special. Most notable, that the band features three guitarists. Which allows them to really layer each track with intricate detail. Then there is their ability to weave narratives into their instrumental soundscape, telling stories without the use of a vocalist. An impossible task for many, but one that Din of Celestial Birds makes seem so easy.

Every single track tells us something different and makes us feel something different. Be it the ‘upbeat’ and’ warming’ melody of opener Utopia that builds to a dynamic crescendo and gives the soul some buoyancy. Or the energised epic-ness, captivating melodies, and heavier turn of Junebug. To use just the first two tracks of this eight-track album as an example. Both tracks are incredibly lovable and they prove that Din of Celestial Birds have plenty of creativity in their veins.

Though there are plenty more. Take the trio of Launch, Laureate of American Lowlife, and This Transient Spring. First, we are treated to a track that features mournful beauty and robust heaviness. A downright tearful track that demands a little more attention from the listener. It’s very easy to give it to them.

Then there is a tribute to the writings of author Charles Bukowski, Laureate of American Lowlife. A track that finds Din of Celestial Birds leaning into darker territories, expanding on their storytelling abilities, and delivering an ode to beautiful misery and reflective intensity. Before atmosphere and ambience takes control for a mentally easing effort.

The word you’re looking for is ‘brilliant’ when it comes to describing this experience.

Brilliance that continues into Downpour as this creative band lets the melodies drizzle down like rain. The measured approach to sorrow is balanced out by eruptions of delinquent intensity that makes this track one of the more treacherous examples of Din of Celestial Birds’ flow.

Then along comes MMEC and I Love You but It’s Killing Me to end the album as spectacularly as it begun. The former has airy melodies, monumental atmosphere, a thrilling spoken-word section, and a blistering tone shift. Whereas the latter is pure and unbridled emotion as it finds Din of Celestial Birds’ speaking about the struggle of addiction and mental illness. An outstanding, heartfelt, and sorrowful showcase that fully captures the imagination, even if it’s something you’ve personally never had to go through.

The word is ‘brilliant’ and no-one who lets this record fully envelop them, will come away thinking differently.
