Album Review: Devourer – Raptus (Iron, Blood & Death Corp.)
The follow-up to their 2019’s impressive Dawn of Extinction release, black metal band Devourer will release their new, and fourth, album ‘Raptus’ on January 31st, 2022.
Beginning in uncompromising fashion, Devourer drop a scornful medley of harsh and horrible blackened metal on skulls with opener, Bearer of Dark Tidings. The blistering speed of the instrumentation and the howling vocals makes for a severe sound but it’s not without rhythm.
Whereas that opener is a torrent of savagery, Terminous takes a more methodically evil sounding road. Where the darkness oozes from within and infects everything its ethereal tentacles curl around. Ton 618 then delivers a pounding but sinisterly driven black metal epic, one that has a bleak grandeur to it but is without a shadow of a doubt, a beast. One of the most impressive tracks on the entire album.
Though the robust heaviness of Apokruptein and twisted fury of Malformed aren’t far off that too. Both tracks continue to give deep appreciation for the absolute destructive savagery that Devourer exude and expel. We are the lucky ones getting to experience it in all its ruthless glory.
Speaking of… Existencial Abhorrence is an ejection of dismal darkness and sullen intensity, Devourer continuing to showcase a passionate focus towards blackened carnage. Before they devastate the senses even more with Visions from Megiddo and deliver a humongous discharge with The Arbter of Nulification.
All good carnage must come to an end though and even a blackened massacre at this level proves to be exhausting. Thankfully, Devourer don’t overstay their welcome and wrap up the album with one last substantial and weighty listen. Torrents to the Void, the finale, one last mean mugging from a band that really knows how to make it feel so worthwhile. Who cares if it leaves your ears ringing, head swimming and stomach gurgling? It was worth every second.
