Album Review: Detest – A World Drowning In Detest (Emanzipation Productions)
‘A World Drowning in Detest’ is the new album from death metal heavyweights, Detest. Due to be released on December 6th, 2024, via Emanzipation Productions.
A powerful entry in the extreme metal catalogue that is 2024, Detest ensure the year ends with a guttural bang via a thick old-school death infused album. One that features a tight eight tracks and pulverises the senses from beginning to end. No nonsense, aside from some exciting and erratic guitar flair that gives it an expected freshness, and focused, it’s a monstrous effort.
The first part of the album will tell you a lot about what Detest are offering here. First, It’s Over, an effective instrumental intro that showcases the guitar flair, then it’s Drowning in Detest, a meaty and mean blast of death-infused intensity. The differing tempos only making the track feel more hostile, and some inventive bass lines add even more impact. If you like what you hear with these two tracks, then Detest have you.
With that, they confidently unleash even more heavy vicious noise and malicious intensity with Bullet Rain, Misery Stand in Line, and F.Y.M.M.F. The middle part of the album confirms what we all already know and that is Detest have worked at making their specific brand of extreme pretty listenable. All while not compromising on the expected ugliness and harshness. That there’s even some progressive and technical thinking here and there, which makes the whole middle part of the album even more impressive.
You got to love a track that just goes the hard and heavy route though, throwing caution to the wind as far as rhythm go, and that’s the excellent Never Can Be Banished. The vocals are really vile sounding here too, adding to the overall nastiness of this head banger.
Then to cap off a solid slab of brutality it’s As I Expected and Supposed to Suffer. The former’s hostility and manic vigour is only matched by the latter’s insistence that you give Detest all the energy you have in one last wild bout of head banging. An easy demand to adhere to as Detest delight in making sure the extreme noise goes nice and hard.
