Album Review: Destruction – Diabolical (Napalm Records)

German thrash metal veterans Destruction celebrate their 40th anniversary by setting the world ablaze with a new, hard-hitting grenade in the form of their new album, Diabolical (out April 8, 2022 via Napalm Records).

40 years of classic German thrash metal, Destruction are betraying their years in the game with a new release that is full of fire and brimstone. A thrash heavyweight that wakes the demon inside and will send spasms thorough the body thanks to the distinctive head-banging qualities it embodies.

A dark and oppressive intro (Under the Spell) gets the mood right, ready for Destruction to unleash their thrashy devastation with the frenetic title track and the blistering No Faith in Humanity. Pure, uncompromising speed with the riffs, solos and hooks coming thick and fast, the drums capable of cracking the earth and the vocals spitting white-hot fire.

The best thing of all? The album is only getting started.

Up next is Reprent Your Sins and Hope Dies Last. The former, a hulking riff monster that is liable to give neck ache. The latter, an aggressive and galloping blast of intense instrumentation and snarling vocals. Another pair of absolute thrash bangers.

Do you like your music to give you the sense of being blasted in the face by a flamethrower while your body shakes uncontrollably as though you’re suffering from a severe infection? The Last of a Dying Breed, State of Apathy and Tormented Soul are three more tracks sure to deliver those results.

The best thing of all? This album doesn’t just do Destruction’s history justice but it’s also a statement for now.

40 years is a long time but Destruction are far from taking it easy and phoning it in. Something all the more thrilling when you see that it’s a 13-track album and Servant Of the Beast comes along with an eye-watering level of savage speed.

The Lonely Wolf, Ghost from the Past and Whorefication make up the latter part of the album and, unsurprisingly, Destruction continue to go hell for leather on each. Leading to the cherry on top that is a cover of punk rock band, G.B.H.’s City Baby Attacked.

All killer and absolutely no filler. Not always something you can say about thrash.
