Album Review: Descent – Order Of Chaos (Brilliant Emperor/Redefining Darkness/Caligari Records)
Australian death metal quintet Descent will their sophomore album Order of Chaos on January 14th, 2022, via Brilliant Emperor (vinyl), Redefining Darkness (CDs) and Caligari Records (tapes).
What an apt title Order of Chaos is. On the one hand, Descent’s ripping and tearing blackened death metal style is pure fucking bedlam. On the other though, they know exactly what they’re doing and do so with a glee that is downright worrying.
With a humongous amount of intensity, the kind that can only come from a place of honesty, Descent unleash a crushing and wild level of heaviness here. Their intent is clear, and the result will be plenty of smashed heads. After all this is death metal with a gnarled twist. The blackened side of their style adding a more nuanced style of nastiness.
With only 8 tracks, and only a handful passing the 4-minute mark, Descent get their mayhem in quick. It’s enough to make your eyes water.
The thing is, if you’re looking to gain attention in metal, being fast, heavy, brutal, or warped just isn’t enough. Combining it all, while being masters of your craft, will certainly turn more heads. This being Descent’s sophomore album, they’re looking to capitalise. Showcasing the same blistering fire, bristling fury and that it wasn’t a one-time only thing. However, it’s also the chaos-mongers refusing to rest on their laurels and ensuring your early musical listens in 2022 come with a side order of brashness and brutishness.
