Album Review: Delilah Bon – Evil, Hate Filled Female (Self Released)

Delilah Bon effortlessly blends mischievous hip-hop, hard-hitting nu-metal, and bratty riot grrrl energy to create her signature ‘Brat Punk’ style. Showcased with aplomb on the new album, ‘Evil, Hate Filled Female’, out on September 13th, 2024.

Have you heard of Delilah Bon? Of course you have. She’s taken the alternative scene by storm already and garnered one hell of a fanbase, as well as plenty of haters too. Which is to be expected, sadly, but Bon is more than capable of holding her own when it comes to clapping back. Across 14-tracks she doesn’t just introduce herself to the world. She lays out who and what she stands for, speaks about important social issues, shines a light on the worst parts of online behaviour, the male-dominated music industry, and so much more. She doesn’t hold back in the slightest and Evil, Hate Filled Female is all the better for it.

If you’re not a hard-headed fool who only listens to the blackest and harshest of metal, you’ll have some familiarity with Delilah Bon’s overall style and sound. It’s not easy to categorise, but it does combine eclectic genres that have proven in the past to sit comfortably together. Which, of course, does mean there are many polarising aspects to her music and this album. Putting it simply, not everything here is a winner, but the ones that are, are seriously strong winners.

Winners like the punchy hip-hop force and shout along metallised chorus of Maverick or the engaging sharpness of the title track. The latter, when paired with the sobering lyrical content of The Internet, will make you sit up and pay attention, if you’re not already. Yes, there’s a ‘fun’ side to these, and other tracks, but Delilah Bon cuts deep with her lyrics and delivery, and it’s this that stays with you long afterwards.

Pissed off hearing a woman sing and rap about female and LGBTQ+ issues? I Am the Best (Just Ask Your Momma), Grown Ass Men, and Drop Dead Delilah are all about you. How sad that so much good music must be born out of such bulls**t thinking?

Delilah Bon is more than just a musician, she’s a movement, a trailblazer, an important part of the changing face of the music industry, and so many people seem to hate that. Oh, you’ll hear the cries of ‘keep politics out of music’ but those people don’t have a f**king clue what they’re talking about. There is no separating the music from the statements, they are intertwined and an important part of Delilah Bon’s makeup. Pop in for the catchiness, but stay for the messages. Who knows? You might find yourself beginning to understand what is being said here that little bit better and having a bloody good time while you’re at it.
