Album Review: Deathstars – Everything Destroys You (Nuclear Blast)

Nine years after their last studio release, 2014’s The Perfect Cult, Swedish industrial metal band, Deathstars return with Everything Destroys You. Out on May 5th, 2023, via Nuclear Blast.

Welcome back Deathstars and their addictive anthemic industrial sound which combines tongue in cheek horror elements, goth-influences, and rock catchiness. If you’ve been eagerly awaiting this new release, you will be happy to know that this is every bit the Deathstars album you could want it to be.

Of course, if you’ve never been on board, you may not have as much fun as the rest of us are having.

Everything Destroys You isn’t just a standard return for Deathstars though, it’s arguably a return to form. While most albums have featured banger tracks that are considered the pinnacle of the Deathstars’ sound, the group haven’t been able to capture the overall memorability of their first two albums, the much-loved Synthetic Generation and Termination Bliss. Until now, that is.

Everything Destroys You sounds like the Deathstars of old and features non-stop banger tracks that are all individually capable of making you move. The gothic tones, industrial heaviness, and anthemic choruses are familiar, but very enjoyable because it’s been so long since we’ve had this from Deathstars.

Yet, it isn’t just a boring rethread of what they’ve done before. It would have been extremely hard for Deathstars to replicate their sound from two decades ago. So, Everything Destroys You is the sound of a band with miles on the clock but refreshed and reenergised. It results in an album of consistency and cohesiveness. An album with a strong backbone of eccentricities and mainstream appeal.

There can be few complaints when Deathstars are delivering infectious tunes like Midnight Party, the title track, An Atomic Prayer, and The Infrahuman Masterpiece. Deathstars are back and they’re bringing the goth-industrial party back with them.
