Album Review: Death the Leveller – II (Cruz Del Sur Music)

Cruz Del Sur Music proudly presents the debut full-length from Ireland’s Death the Leveller entitled “II”.

Originally formed in 2016 out of the ashes of long-running Irish metal ensemble Mael Mórdha, Death the Leveller (who are comprised of vocalist Denis Dowling, guitarist Gerry Clince, bassist Dave Murphy and drummer Shane Cahill), released their debut EP I, in 2017.

Throughout “II”, Death the Leveller explores the theme of mortality from a deeply personal, introspective viewpoint. It will be released on March 13th 2020.

With sharp squeals of guitar, Death the Leveller welcome us to their gloomy and melancholic landscape. One with darkened skies, the hint of rain in the air and cold winds blowing over empty hills. What we have here is a doom album (of sorts), one with deep and brooding heaviness but poignant melodies too. It’s the latter that makes each of the four tracks here something to behold.

Each one a journey filled with impossible hardships and soul-destroying hurdles but not looking to halt your progress. Rather to guide you through the tough times and show you how beautiful it can all be even if it’s shown in a way that implies darkness over light.

This is not a record that you put on in the background, nor is it something you press play on at a party. It’s far too introspective and thought-provoking for that which will be off-putting for some. Don’t be put off though, grab some headphones, turn the lights off and lose yourself in the world of Death the Leveller’s II for 40 odd minutes. It’s well worth it.
