Album Review: Death Pill – Death Pill (New Heavy Sounds)

New Heavy Sounds will release the self-titled debut album of Death Pill, an all-female hardcore punk power trio, on February 24th, 2023.

A smash-mouth and bone-breaking start; the frenzy of riffs, drums, and snarky vocals that are expelled from Death pill on their opening track, Dirty Rotten Youth, is the shot of adrenaline the world needs. The scathing intensity of metallic hardcore, thrashy in delivery, and liable to cause of riot. It’s Death Pill making a strong statement and grabbing attention by the collar.

With a vicious blast of groove, the sheer intensity of Miss Revolt sees the three-piece tighten their grip. A short but significant display of fury. Before Die for Vietnam changes the overall tone of the album so far with a showcase of melody and cleaner vocals. Blended expertly with their no-nonsense metal attack of course. It’s the most elaborate sounding track so far, and dives into their punky side nicely.

Друг (Drug) is an apt name as the stompy heaviness is extremely addictive. Death Pill’s manic and measured heavy groove continues to be extraordinarily substantial. Even when they’re moving so fast, it’s leaving a deep welt on the ground they walk upon. Whereas the most memorable thing about It’s A Joke are the thick and meaty riffs, Go Your Way focuses on the pure punk rock-infused energy, and Kill the Traitors is a sneering and snarling expose of noise.

Death Pill galivanting their way through the album with all the confidence of a band several albums into their career. It’s near impossible to not be head over heels in love with what they are delivering here. This debut record is exceptionally charming, in an abrasive and animalistic way.

So, it’s no surprise that Расцарапаю Ебало (Scratch Asshole) is as blisteringly fierce as everything heard so far. Albeit, with even more intensity to the vocals. Mariana Navrotskaya (voacls), is not messing around here, that’s for sure. Before the album wraps up with an exhilarating combination of their melodic and metallic side. Death Pill’s music gets up close and personal, and this finale is one last wild and wonderful ride.

Watch out world, Death Pill are aiming for domination here and with this kind of music in their arsenal, it doesn’t seem impossible to believe. Expect to hear a lot of flowing platitudes for this band as the year goes on and expect to be hearing about them long afterwards too.
