Album Review: Deadthrone – Premonitions (Arising Empire)

UK Post Hardcore band Deadthrone will release their new album ‘Premonitions’ on August 23rd 2019 via Arising Empire.

Premonitions

I’m not to sure about the chipmunky style of vocals that start off Feel and remain rooted in the background throughout. Incredibly obnoxious and distracting especially as the track overall is solid post-hardcore once it gets going. Heaviness mixed with clean passages and guttural noise. Far from spectacular but not doing too much wrong either.

Runaway and Revival are much better efforts, the former utilising the clean singing well while the latter is catchy and nice and heavy. Then Time Won’t Wait brings some nice groove and utilises extra effects well. One of the stronger tracks on the album.

Enjoy these moments because Premonitions struggles to really stand out from the post-hardcore crowd and it’s only tracks like that which really create any kind of buzz or excitement.

If the heavier side of Deadthrone is what you care about then Wide Awake and Hearts in Our Hands will certainly satisfy. Here, on both, the more brutal vocals stand out creating a more enjoyable side of metal. Sandwiched in between though is the bland Believe, a track that has ‘skip’ written all over it.

It begins to lose its lustre the deeper into it we go. Even though Stand Your Ground is pretty damn good. However, it’s followed by the jarring effects of Respite, the one saving grave of it being that it’s nothing more than an intermission.

Unfortunately those hoping for a strong finish might come away disappointed as Soothsayer, Beacons and Seven Years stick to the formula set out already. Heavy on jarring effects at times, an over-reliance on the clean/heavy vocal combo and nothing that really grabs you.

Disappointing.
