Album Review: Contrarian – Their Worm Never Dies (Willowtip)
U.S. progressive Death Metal squad Contrarian will release new album Their Worm Never Dies on March 15th 2019 via Willowtip Records.
A new school of old school death metal. Spearheaded by guitar player Jim Tasikas, alongside George Kollias (Nile) simultaneously handling drum and vocal duties. Contrarian is not a super group, but a unit of like-minded musicians that coincidentally converged on a vision of what a modern death metal band should sound like.
Absolutely nailing the mix of old-school death metal pushed through a modern sieve, Contrarian delivers a righteous and exciting seven-track album. An album that is sharp on the ears with intense riffs, ritualistic percussion and dirty, nasty vocals.
We get all of that, and more throughout Their Worm Never Dies, the aggression and fury of all Contrarian have directed through the speakers at the listener. Fans of the rawness of old-school death metal will find themselves thoroughly enjoying this release.
That being said, it is another death metal release, something that is so regular and familiar that standing out from the crowd is no easy task. Contrarian could suffer from the same issue that plagues many other bands in the sub-genre. Which is sounding too samey but by keeping the album short, it never becomes an issue for these guys.
Instead what we have here are seven raging torrents of sometimes abusive, sometimes vile and sometimes impressive death metal.
