Album Review: Confined – Eternal Fury of the Disillusioned Ones (Vargheist Records)

Confined blend old school death metal with 90s brutal death metal and will release ‘Eternal Fury of the Disillusioned Ones’ on January 3rd, 2023, via Vargheist Records. The culmination of two decades of work for the band. It features 11 tracks spanning the band’s career that have been re-arranged and re-recorded.

Now a solo project (Roger B. – vocals, guitars, bass and drum programming), Confined starts the New Year off looking to the past. Taking a bunch of tracks from the extensive history and re-imagining/re-working them. Though it’s still a raging and snarling ball of furious death metal. It just happens to be a much more listenable experience, thanks to better production and the extensive knowledge picked up over the past decades.

This record works for two separate camps. On the one hand, you will have those who have been long-term Confined fans and they get to enjoy re-recorded and re-arranged tracks that they will no doubt be very familiar with. Then, on the other hand, you have those who like a bit of extreme and may never have spent much time with Confined. Getting to experience a bit of a compilation, dragged kicking and screaming into the modern era, while sounding suitably old-school.

That’s where Confined’s sound sits after all. Rooted in the old-school growl and gurn of death metal. Slipping effortlessly into heavier and more brutal locales when needed. From the very start, it’s a gargantuan tome of nasty, and it doesn’t let up.

Heavy and harsh enough to turn the heads of those who are well versed in the more extreme side of metal. These tracks aren’t going to replace the originals but they are a nice aside and serve as a hint for where the future of Confined is heading, especially as a solo project.
