Album Review: Chaos Over Cosmos – The Silver Lining Between the Stars (Self Released)
Chaos Over Cosmos, the progressive metal project of two guys who never met each other and done completely online, are back. The Silver Lining Between the Stars is their new album and it will be released on the 1st August 2021. It is their third album and first with vocalist KC Lyon.
While clearly still Chaos Over Cosmos, The Silver Lining Between Our Stars has a notable difference to their previous work. This album is heavier, quite a bit heavier. Drawing influence from the worlds of technical death metal and progressive death metal.
That being said, it’s still very much Chaos Over Cosmos. Chaotic technicality and spacey, other-worldly melodies from the keyboards. Blistering tempos and shredding guitars, intense soloing, pounding drumbeats and scattered but brutally guttural vocals. The combination is familiar, even if this is your first experience with Chaos Over Cosmos, but very welcome. They’re one of the brightest stars in the tech-metal universe.
35 minutes of this might sound ‘dry’ but it’s anything but that. Chaos Over Cosmos have a wealth of ideas and keep the ‘spacey’ feel consistent throughout. A track like ‘The Last Man in Orbit’ is downright epic with its keyboard melodies and synthy touches.
Whereas the clean singing on The Sins Between the Stars adds an equal amount of mournfulness and hopefulness to proceedings. A finale that is as grand as anything this band has put out to date.
The Silver Lining Between the Stars might very well be Chaos Over Cosmos’ finest work to date. Which is saying something considering the quality this band has been producing for years.
