Album Review: Cercenatory – GoreSphere (Comatose Music)
The Colombian death machine, Cercenatory, have returned with GoreSphere, their first new album in more than seven years. Out on February 16th, 2024, via Comatose Music.
What can be said about GoreSphere that doesn’t pertain to the word ‘brutal’? After all, Cercenatory are the epitome of brutal death metal and this album embodies the carnage whole-heartedly. Albeit with an added level of horror that creates madness-inducing imagery in the mind.
There’s something almost fantastical about the intro of Devoured by Shadows: Annales Imminentis Exilium, even though it’s a frightening soundscape. Yet, it can not prepare the senses for the assault of grim noise that follows with Inquisitor Vortex Soul Torturing and Through the Deep Thoughts of Tartarean Sadistic Cannibalism. Their sound is so thick and oppressive, raw and rancid, and exceptionally ugly.
The things is, Cercenatory are talented bunch of noise mongers and this talent, alongside a strong focus on being as unrelenting as possible, makes this quite an enjoyable listen. Provided you have a thirstiness for the kind of garish and guttural horror that comes from the likes of Through the Deep Thoughts of Tartarean Sadistic Cannibalism, He, Who Stands Upon Holy Corpectomies, and Into the GoreSphere. Before you’ve even had a chance to let it ferment in the mind, the album is halfway done.
Mind you, there’s only so much of this kind of crashing instrumentation and gnarly vocals that anyone can take, so the fact that it doesn’t stick around is a good thing. Cercenatory crafting even more sinister soundscapes and horror-laden heaviness with a bevy of harsh death metal songs. Infernal Festival of Lecherous Dismemberment, Crucified, Gutted, Desecrated, Macabre Trepanation Orgy in Hell’s Dungeons, and Abyss of Impaled Religious Incandescent Torches. All as fetid and furious as the other. Leading to the finale of Phalaris Bull Seraphic Extermination & Infinite Carnage, and one last chance to take a pummelling like no other.
The brutality of Cercenatory can’t be understated and GoreSphere is the perfect showcase of just how devastating their music is.
