Album Review: CB3 – Aeons (The Sign Records)
Stars above, evil below and fire in between. A trinity in peace for aeons. CB3 (Charlottas Burning Trio) is here to bring you on a journey with their explosive rock jams and mind-bending cosmic soundscapes. CB3 brings the spirit of psychedelic music to the 21th century; with a style that ranges from heavy psych rock jams like Jimi Hendrix to delicate atmospheric passages like Pink Floyd and progressive rhythms like King Crimson and Mahavishnu Orchestra. Close your eyes, set your mind free and drift away into the musical universe of CB3.
Aeons is the title of CB3’s new album set for release on the 28th of February 2020 through The Sign Records.
If there is something that really stands out with CB3 from the moment Zodiac arrives with its fuzzy rhythm, it’s the psychedelic clout this band holds. Groovy, grimy and very hazy, the rumble of the riffs is deliciously sexy backed up by a simple, yet effective set of drums. Cutting through the fog are subtle effects that really encourage body moment.
The rumble becomes even more powerful as Sonic Blaze comes along to strip away any preconceived ideas you might have of CB3. It business as usual at first and then it drops away into nearly nothing. Soft drum taps and a haunting soundscape before a whining noise that sounds like a warning builds. As it dissipates, the coldness deepens and the bass thrums away with restraint. It all continues to build back up, the energy increasing until we’re back to where we started with CB3.
Acid Haze is an apt title, a track that is the combination of an intense drug trip and being lost in a deep, thick fog. Lethargic, a little sickly (thanks to the vibrations caused by the bass) and very ‘trippy’. Then just when it seems to be going on too long, the pace quickens and the haze clears putting a little pep in the step.
It should come as no surprise that Warrior Queen continues the exciting work of CB3 with a more upbeat sounding number. With catchy rhythm and well-layered effects, it’s one that gets seriously stuck in the head. Before the subtle hook of Apocalypse gets under way, the acoustic guitar strumming offering a different sound before it breaks into a really light and floaty tune. The saxophone ending is certainly something to behold.
A very unique listen.
