Rising death metal force Cathexis will release their debut album Untethered Abyss on June 25th on CD, vinyl, and digital formats via Willowtip Records.

Untethered Abyss is the culmination of six years of painstaking songwriting and a carefully selected cast of international talent amassed to bring forward a finely tuned and unrelenting piece of modern death metal.

A blistering array of talent is on show throughout Untethered Abyss and it comes through the medium of death metal. Modern, tinged with technicality and build on a foundation of savagery. You wouldn’t want it any other way and neither would we.

Cathexis make sure to not disappoint as across eight slamming efforts they rip, tear and shred their way through every soft brain they come across. The word that comes to mind is ‘suggestible’ as that’s what Cathexis are doing. Suggesting in their own twisted way that you join them on this path of viciousness. If you love your death metal fast, hard and constantly heavy then you won’t be able to deny the pull they have.

The riffs hit hard and evolve throughout most songs. There’s a modern technicality that gives a lot of them a chainsaw quality. The main culprit for this music searing its way across the brain. Then we have the bass and drums, adding a disgustingly meaty sound throughout before the vocals have to get a mention for the pure demonic power behind them. It might sound par for the course for death metal but Cathexis are doing extra special things with their instruments here and it is wonderful.

Don’t sleep on this one. If you think 2021 has already had some top shelf death metal releases and nothing better could come along, it’s time to be corrected.
