Album Review: Catch Your Breath – Shame On Me (Thriller Records)

A fresh, burgeoning alt-rock band based out of Austin, Texas, Catch Your Breath will release their new album ‘Shame On Me’ on October 20th, 2023, via Thriller Records.

It’s always nice to immediately understand what all the fuss is about and with the hyper-intensity, but anthemic as f**k introduction of No Evil, it all becomes very clear. Catch Your Breath have an appealing alternative sound, aren’t afraid to get a bit heavy and wild, but almost always deliver choruses that you can sing and move to.

The bar might have been set, but that isn’t going to stop this band aiming high with the melody of Dying on the Inside and Dial Tone. Both tracks showcase vocals that get particularly dramatic. However, of the two, it’s the latter that sounds big.

Catch Your Breath are open to experiment and more than willing to push their creativity to fresh, interesting levels. Case in point? The middle portion of this record that sees varied track after track come crashing down. Cycles, a track that has some extra meatiness and a powerful chorus. Deadly, a track that oozes passion and leans to a more dance-friendly crowd. Y.S.K.W, a track that hits a ton of alternative rock notes, especially when the chorus comes along, and My Confessions, a track that has a strong cinematic tone, but is also uber-melodramatic.

Across this run, and with what follows, Catch Your Breath bare their souls and pour so much energy into making this experience something that stays with you. It’s hard to argue with the unforgettable nature of the record when the likes of Savages has such dynamic groove, Mirror is heavy on the crossover appeal, Don’t Go is buoyant as hell, and Cold Light delivers a bright, brash, and wistful combo of melody.

It’s the sign of a damn fine album when you realise, you’re at the end and you didn’t really notice. Catch Your Breath have made sure each track on this album is very digestible, so the last couple of tracks kind of sneak up. Happily, Shame On Me ends in strong fashion too. Firstly, with one of their current beloved anthems, 21 Gun Salute and then with their future beloved anthem, the title track. Both tracks offer different levels of Catch Your Breath prettiness, intensity, and power.

Catch Your Breath’s rise has been steady so far, but that is about to change. This band is going to shoot off and Shame On Me is the fuel injection.
