Album Review: Burning Tongue – Prisoner’s Cinema (Aqualamb Records)

Burning Tongue is here to remind you that the plague has arrived and rain piss all over your pitiful socially distanced BBQs, park hangs and elbow daps. The debut LP from the band formerly known as Blackest, Prisoner’s Cinema, is eleven new songs of crushing nihilism that nod to the shadowy side of hardcore punk– channelling the works of everyone from Craft to Dwid Hellion to G.I.S.M. and updating them for modern audiences.

Two years in the making, Burning Tongue’s new LP hits on October 29th, 2021 via Aqualamb Records.

Urgh, this is a sick sounding record and we don’t mean ‘sick’ in a ‘cool’ way. We mean in the vomitus, bile-encrusted and bloody phlegm way. 11 tracks to force down your throat, 11 slabs of hardcore-infused punk and metal. Each one as substantial as the last and each with the ability to choke the life out of you. Such is the blistering vehemence and intensity of Burning Tongue.

It sounds horrendous, doesn’t it? Oh, it is but that’s not a bad thing. Burning Tongue have two settings. One is hyper-fast and hyper-aggressive, the other is methodical heaviness brimming with threat. Burning Tongue are the nightmares you wake up from sweating in the dark of night. The reason you grip your pillow tighter and screw your eyes shut.

Prisoner’s Cinema encapsulates the frustration, anger, disappointment and horror of the past few years perfectly. Take all those times you’ve swallowed down an eruption, forced your exasperation to simmer and boil deep in your soul. Let it free and you have the feelings that this album creates in you.

It’s no short album either. There’s a lot of hate to expunge here and Burning Tongue are taking their time. It’s amazing just how listenable this record is considering all of this. Not only will you find yourself well and truly addicted to what you’re hearing, you’ll be driven to hit play over and over again once it ends.

Abhorrence comes in a new form and its name is Burning Tongue.
