Album Review: Brave The Sea – Lady Death (Self Released)

Brave the Sea is a Columbus, OH Celtic rock band whose fun live performances and hook filled melodies have won over a legion of fans. Now, the band is gearing up to release a brand-new LP called ‘Lady Death’, due out on April 28th, 2023.

It’s fun to see a new (ish) band enter the world of Celtic rock, especially as that scene is completely dominated by a handful of bands that have been grinding that axe for a long time.

To be fair though, it’s hardly a style of music that sees much in the way of innovation either. Celtic rock is exactly what it says it is. Songs about the old country, warm fires on dark nights, sombre reflections, a drink or two, good friends, and good times. Which is exactly what Brave the Sea offer up here. Familiar and fun tunes that draw from the well of Celtic rock bands that have come before.

That’s not to say that it’s just a re-run of a tried and tested formulas, as Brave the Sea have some of their own interesting touches to make them stand out. Yet, if you want singalongs and anthems, they will also deliver on those by the pint glass.

They give off a strong ‘folk’ vibe, in the way that you wouldn’t be surprised to see them playing a country fair, your local, or stages of most alternative festivals. Put them anywhere and chances are people will have a good time. Especially when they lean right into the energetic ‘jig’ side of their music. Tracks like On My Way, Bad Luck, and Day I Die will get everyone up and moving.

Yet, a track like Lady Death or Unnamed Grave deserve a mention too as it finds the band in a more pensive, cinematic, and elaborate mood. Showing that Brave the Sea have plenty more than just Celtic rock to offer. Even if, going off the majority of songs on this album, that is more than enough to enjoy.
