Album Review: Born of Osiris – Angel Or Alien (Sumerian Records)

Progressive metal band, Born of Osiris return with their brand new sixth album ‘Angel or Alien’ out July 2nd 2021 via Sumerian Records.

Kicking off their new album with one hell of anthem, Poster Child buoys the spirit while also encouraging a wild bout of head-banging. The heavy progressive groove mixes well with the tight electronica and chilled usage of a saxophone. Yes, you read that right.

It’s a killer start but there’s plenty more to come. White Nile has some kickass jagged riffing and an aggression that just makes you feel ten feet tall. The title track and its wild use of electronica and synth, clean vocals parts and massive guitar solo sounds great. Waves is another classic Born of Osiris anthem, Oathbreaker has the vocals reaching throat-tearing levels of ferocity and Threat of Your Presence has the guitars slam so damn hard.

The halfway point of this massive album then comes with the massive sounding Love Story. Where the dirty buzzsaw riffs, metal groove and electronica blends perfectly with some nice melodies. Already, with just half of the album done, Born of Osiris are proving that this 6th release might very well be their best so far.

It’s an album that demands you constantly move and it’s hard to argue with it. The spitting and snarling noise of Crossface, the breakdown overlaid with sharp electronic melody is something else. Both Echobreather and Lost Souls have killer solos and In for the Kill goes hard and very heavy.

You’d think this would be exhausting, but it’s just too much fun and Born of Osiris are far too good at keeping the spirits high even if their brand of progressive metal is so intense. Talking of which… You Are the Narrative and Truth and Denial are explosive bursts of energy. A pair of raging efforts.

Leading to the gargantuan finale that is Shadowmourne, a disgustingly catchy anthem for Born of Osiris to close their phenomenal album on. They’ve done an amazing job here, gaining and keeping the attention for 55 minutes and across 14 varied sounding tracks.
