Album Review: Bohemyst – Čerň A Smrt (Petrichor)

The heirs to Master’s Hammer’s throne of Czech metal unleash their blackened metal upon mankind!

Bohemyst is a follow-up to Czech dark horde Avenger. Various personal and practical reasons led to quitting Avenger on its 25th anniversary (1992-2017) and the band continues to deliver dark metal under the new name Bohemyst.

Now, Bohemyst are set to unleash their first album ‘Čerň A Smrt’ on August 13th, 2021 via Petrichor.

Blackened metal played with a ferocity that is downright dangerous and downright addictive. Bohemyst deliver heaviness rooted in the dark and evil side of heavy metal and showcase just how talented they are. After all, this might be the debut for this band, but it’s not anything close for the members.

Part ferocity and guttural glee, part doom-laden atmospheric horror and delectable evilness, and part crunchy heaviness and wicked instrumentation. We have one of 2021’s most perilous sounding records from a band that seems to revel in their own wickedness.

Starting off strong with an atmospheric intro, the bleak heaviness truly takes hold with the title track. A frenzy of guitars, battering of drums and scathing assault of vocals, Bohemyst have tasted blood.

With ravenous elation, they continue their feverish blackened assault with Krvehlas, the absolute tome that is Na Umrlčích Prknech and Paní Lesa, where lavish touches make things sound fresher.

Kosti doubles down on that with some gothic sounding effects throughout while Bohemyst continue to play at a blistering speed. Something they increase with the eye-watering savagery of Co Nelze Zapomenout before the gothic vibes come back for the ‘romantic’ Nekromantika.

There’s no question that Bohemyst will end the album just as strongly and with the absolutely crashing and smashing of instruments, that’s exactly what they do with Do Chřtánu Smrti and Zvrácenosti Zvědavosti. A final head-knocking, gut-churning and bowel-loosening blast pairing to confirm this as one of the best heavy releases this year.
