Album Review: bloodyclerks – doldrums combustion (Self Released)

Instrumental atmospheric doom metal band bloodyclerks formed in Alicante (Spain), 1996. They have released four albums to date, with the latest ‘doldrums combustion’ coming on April 30th, 2021.

With progressive elements and a willingness to expand their doom sound into more melodic realms, bloodyclerks are not your average doom band. A deep and winding path through mournful sonic passages, dark and cold but with moments that comfort. It’s 8 powerful efforts that ring throughout the gloom, some more atmospheric than others (Yearning for Seagull Wings) and others doomier (Made of Darkness Light).

That’s just two tracks from the first half that encapsulate the wide-ranging sound of bloodyclerks and both are far more complex and detailed. There isn’t a single track that comes in at under 6 and a half minutes here and most pass the 8-minute mark. It’s never boring though, nor will you find yourself missing vocals.

Easily the most accomplished track on the album and the one to listen too if you only have time for one mammoth epic, is Heartless Triumph. A track that is daringly uplifting and showcases how powerful instrumental doom can be when layered with wonderful atmosphere. It’s a beauty of a track.

The second half of the album has strength too. The progressive depth of Mulsanne Straight and sombre but heavy melody of Hideaway Headlights are excellent. Whereas Iconic Flyline and Another World Dreams mix powerful atmospheric effects and deep, dark doom heaviness to great results.

It’s a long one but it’s a satisfying one.
