Album Review: Blood Incantation – Hidden History of the Human Race (Dark Descent Records/Century Media Records)

Blood Incantation formed in 2011 by guitarist/vocalist Paul Riedl and drummer Isaac Faulk. Joined by guitarist Morris Kolontyrsky and bassist Jeff Barrett, the band spent many years developing their sound through rehearsal demos and promo tapes before finally embarking on their first tour in 2015, which coincided with the release of their debut studio EP Interdimensional Extinction on Dark Descent Records.

After releasing a now-infamous split EP with Spectral Voice, the band released its debut album Starspawn (Dark Descent Records) in 2016, which took the underground death metal world by storm with its cerebral whirlwind of intense and otherworldly atmospheric death metal.

Now the cosmic death metal band announce the release of their much-anticipated second full-length album, Hidden History of the Human Race. Dark Descent Records will release the album in North America with Century Media handling Europe. The album is set for worldwide release on November 22nd 2019.

Holy heck, this is so far from the conventional it’s astonishing. Not in sound per-se as Blood Incantation are as brutal and bruising as they come but in how that beating is meted out. Three enormous and world-destroying tracks and one absolute beast that comes in at 18 minutes long. Yes, this is savage. Yes, this is death metal but it’s got layers and layers to un-peel.

Take a listen to The Giza Power Plant if Slave Species of the Gods hasn’t convinced you. The squeal of the guitars, guttural roars of vocals and Eastern instruments combining so interestingly.

Then of course there is Awakening from the Dream of Existence to the Multidimensional Nature of Our Reality (Mirror of the Soul). The track title alone will tell you all you need to know about this epic. Words can hardly do it justice, it’s simply an unbelievably ambitious track and something that only a band of this calibre could be capable of.

It’s a death metal trawl through noisy chaos and while the idea of such a lengthy pummelling might not appeal, Blood Incantation work and adapt to ensure interest stays throughout. Darkened drops into nothingness, filthy screeches of guitar and a drum battering like no other.

Ouch, but the good kind of ouch.
