Album Review: Blind Guardian – Live Beyond the Spheres (Nuclear Blast)

Considered to be one of the most seminal & important power metal bands in the world, Blind Guardian have released their 3rd live album & first since 2003’s Live. 22 Songs spanning their lengthy career, this is the ultimate live album for all Blind Guardian fans especially if you’ve been to any of their shows.

We have & you can check out our reviews of their London April 2015 show here & their London May 2016 show here. We’re massive fans of the band, so much so that we put together a top 10 Blind Guardian songs article that you can read here.

It’s been over two years since the release of the excellent Beyond the Red Mirror (check out our review here) & opening song, The Ninth Gate still sounds as good as it did on first listen. It’s the perfect Blind Guardian opener, powerfully bombastic.

All the songs were recorded at different venues on the band’s 2015 world tour but you wouldn’t know it thanks to the quality of the band & the crowds in attendance. Anyone who has been to a Blind Guardian show will tell you, it’s all about crowd interaction. Blind Guardian fans love to sing along, extending songs past their normal finish point. It’s an absolute treat to be part of & it comes across wonderfully here.

Songs like Nightfall, Tanelorn, The Bard’s Song (In the Forest) & Valhalla sound absolutely huge here.

The quality of the recordings can’t be understated. Singer Hansi Kursch has a stunning set of pipes on him & the power he exudes is evident throughout Live Beyond the Spheres. He’s one of the few singers that sounds as good live as he does on record.

As the album is a Blind Guardian retrospective, all the favourites are here. Classic Guardian songs such as The Lord of the Rings, Imaginations from the Other Side, Sacred Worlds, Wheel of Time, Mirror Mirror etc. There all here & they all sound great but thankfully there are enough songs from Beyond the Red Mirror too to help keep the album feeling relevant too.

The best live Blind Guardian release & a must buy for all fans of the power metal maestros.
