Album Review: Black Mass – Feast at the Forbidden Tree (Redefining Darkness Records)
Boston thrashers’ Black Mass unleash their latest offering, Feast at the Forbidden Tree on September 10th, 2021 via Redefining Darkness Records.
Thrash is undying and bands like Black Mass are proof of that. Sounding like they fell through a time warp from the 80’s to present day, the thrash maniacs aren’t looking to reinvent the wheel here. Instead they offer up a powerful blast from the past that will have ageing metalheads around the world dusting off their tight, leather pants.
There’s nothing complex about Feast at the Forbidden Tree. It doesn’t require deeper analysis as it is exactly what it says on the tin. Thrash fucking metal, so you’ll already know just how interested you are in the album.
However, it is well worth nothing that Black Mass are kicking all kinds of ass here. They sound great, super-tight and refined with just enough modern productions tricks to give it an old-school flavour without sounding rubbish. It’s fast, it’s frantic, it’s heavy and it’s memorable. What more could you ask for? Especially if you’re crying out for some simple thrash-based noise!
