Album Review: Bitch Falcon – Staring At Clocks (Small Pond Records)

Bitch Falcon are a name you will not forget, and a band who will not let you forget them. The acclaimed Irish trio will release their debut LP Staring At Clocks on November 6th via Small Pond Records.

An exciting prospect, there’s a buzz around Bitch Falcon and with the hot rocking tempo and catchiness of opening I’m Ready Now, it’s hard not to be sold almost immediately. The groovy riffs, the greasy bass hooks and commanding, yet measured vocal performance sets the scene very well.

Sold Youth lets the bass fly in style for a more refined performance where a quality synth-infused latter part really stands out. Turned to Gold builds on that with something that feels light and airy, grounded only by an excellent set of vocals. How Did I Know then combines jagged guitars with a grander sense of being and the title track has a touching and ethereal sound to it. At least until the jarring and wild portion right near the end.

There’s no denying that Bitch Falcon certainly showcase variety in the first half of Staring At the Clocks. The eclectic style of the band has a strong unique flavour and that continues into Damp Breath and Test Trip. The former is a wicked burst of energy that has a punk rock feel to it and the latter is lusciously catchy with once again, the bass standing tall.

Two of the album’s best tracks in a row, the following Martyr is almost a lost cause until it hits a frantic finish. Although happily we then get a thoughtful beast in the form of Gaslight, the chunkiest of tracks before Harvester draws a line under proceedings. Bitch Falcon going out in melodramatic but majestic fashion.
