Album Review: Beneath the Massacre – Fearmonger (Century Media Records)

Canada-based tech-death specialists Beneath the Massacre have returned! After nearly eight years of slumber, the Great Beast from the North is ready to slay fretboards, shatter blastbeat records, and blow minds again on their fourth album and Century Media debut, Fearmonger. Due out on February 28th 2020.

Assailing the mind with a flurry of technical riffs, time-changes, licks and more…the power behind Beneath the Massacre’ guitars certainly stands out. However, it’s not just that as the tech-death lunatics also bring an eye-wateringly fast style of drumming and an ear-bleedingly strong set of guttural vocals too.

With barely a chance to draw breath; Rise of the Fearmonger, Hidden in Plain Sight, Of Gods and Machines and Treacherous hold nothing back. Easily some of the most intense pieces of heavy metal music heard in some time.

Although it’s not as if Beneath the Massacre calm it down for Autonomous Mind or Return to Medusa. Far from it, the guitars in the former reaching new levels of intricacy while the latter is a short and strident crack to the head.

Bottom Feeders begins like it might be doing something different but it’s not long before the grinding viciousness rears its ugly head. Leading to a final trio of Absurd Hero, Flickering Light and Bitterest End where Beneath the Massacre put the ferocious stamp on proceedings.

One of 2020’s most penetrating albums.
