Album Review: Behold The Arctopus – Hapeleptic Overtrove (Willowtip Records/P2)

Mighty NYC trio Behold the Arctopus have partnered with Willowtip Records for the June 12th release of Hapeleptic Overtrove, the band’s 7th recording, on vinyl LP and digital formats. The CD version will be released via P2.

Experimental metal madness. That are the three words to describe what Behold the Arctopus have created here.

Now, we’ve used the ‘insanity’ term many times to describe bands who are just going all out with their music. Be it in an uncompromisingly heavy way, an uber-progressive way or a combination of both. However, no band this year and maybe even longer has exemplified the sound of lunacy in quite this way.

Chaos? That’s being kind to the absolute cacophony of noise that comes from Behold the Arctopus and is so dominant throughout Hapeleptic Overtrove.

This is not an album that you can just describe to someone, such is the inane nonsense and lack of order to it. It’s as infuriating as it is fascinating as this mash-up of instruments is the sound of a band knowing exactly what they are doing. Behold the Arctopus have crafted this, clearly worked hard to showcase order amongst the chaos and deliver something truly memorable. On that point they have certainly achieved their task. It’s really going to be a marmite release.
