Album Review: Begat The Nephilim – Begat the Nephilim I: The Surreptitious Prophecy/Mother of the Blasphemy (Unholy Anarchy Records)

Out on June 15th 2018 via Unholy Anarchy Records, Begat the Nephilim I: The Surreptitious Prophecy/Mother of the Blasphemy is the debut album from extreme melodic blackened death metal band, Begat the Nephilim. Fans of Fleshgod Apocalypse, The Black Dahlia Murder and Behemoth will likely really enjoy this.

The album tells the tale of the Mother of Blasphemy, an ancient godlike Nephilim, her rise to power and the resulting consequences facing mankind and the world.

Nephilim 2

10 tracks of brutal and savage metal delivered by a band capable of constantly firing on all cylinders. It’s an explosive start with L’inizio smashing down what boundaries remain between black and death metal before Cardboard Casket shows off a bit more guitar technique with a screaming guitar solo right off the bat.

Don’t let that fool you though, Begat the Nephilim are all about heaviness just with a really layered amount of rhythm too. Switching between roaring brutality and old school guitar led riffing, tracks like Perfect Place to Die, Fervor for Flesh and Mobin are dark, twisted and evil sounding.

The latter in particular is easily the standout track of the album. Coming in at just 8 minutes, the crunchy beat of the drums, the huge sounding guitar grooves and ferocious vocals work together to leave such an impression. In the last few minutes of the track the heaviness drops away to allow some melody in. The kind that puts a wistful smile on the face before the best guitar solo of the album is fired off.

There’s not a bad song on the album. A huge amount of variety keeps things sounding fresh and the band have so much talent in their ranks that the level of melodic heaviness that comes from Apotheosis of the Apocalypse Pt. 1: In the Shadow of the Nephilim (A Cold Wind Stirs the Midnight Air) and Apotheosis of the Apocalypse Pt. 2: Dawn of the Nephilim  (A Warm Wind Breathes a New Despair) can be rightly looked at some of the best stuff this year.
