Album Review: Bedsore – Hypnagogic Hallucinations (20 Buck Spin)

Warping minds and matter with their two track 2018 demo, Bedsore came to the attention of 20 Buck Spin, who together in twisting conspiracy now issue the full length album “Hypnagogic Hallucinations”. A fitting title for the dark lucid dreamscapes and obscure fantasia Bedsore deliver on their debut.

An uninhibited first step for a band emboldened to travel to the farthest reaches of the possible within the celestial spheres of Death Metal. Hypnagogic Hallucinations will be released on the 24th July 2020.

Aiming to expand on people’s perceptions of death metal, Bedsore craft a psychedelic variant on a deep and troubling sound. The twisted sound of the eerie guitar melody, snyth and drums getting the album started in a positive way with The Gate, Disclosure (Intro). Which leads to an eruption of brutality with The Gate, Closure (Sarcoptes Obitus) where blackened horror reigns supreme.

The real Bedsore have now revealed themselves and it’s time to suffer at their hands. Deathgazer is first up to deliver weighty blows of speed, evil and ferocity. Followed by At the Mountains of Madness, a track that cracks open the universe, rummages around and pulls the entrails out for all to see. Mind-blowing expansive and interesting, it’s a track that truly excels at what Bedsore are looking to sell.

Have they peaked? That depends on what you’re looking for with Cauliflower Growth and Disembowlment of the Souls (Tabanide). If it’s all about the hunks of meaty death metal than they will certainly provide. Although they’re not without depth as you should no doubt be expecting by this stage. With Bedsore it’s never as simple as just saying it’s a slab of heavy intensity.

It’s that imagination that makes this album such a thrilling listen and as Brains on the Tarmac is reached, 40 minutes feels like half that.
