Album Review: Bastard Grave – Diorama Of Human Suffering (Pulverised Records)

Four years after their debut “What Lies Beyond”, Swedish filth-practitioners Bastard Grave return with an absolute headclobber, entitled “Diorama Of Human Suffering”! Stripping away the traditional Swedish chainsaw sound, Bastard Grave have never sounded more disgusting, repulsive and yet intriguing as an aural stormstrike resulting in a swampfuck of a bludgeoning Death Metal record.

Diorama Of Human Suffering will be released on August 16th 2019 via Pulverised Records.

Grave

Aiming to leave the listener with nothing but the feeling of despair and despondency, the nine tracks of Diorama of Human Suffering are cruel, unfeeling and filled with malice. It’s an album chock full of deep and rumbling riffs, the evilest of vocals and a thrumming drum beat that gives the impression of Hell opening up below you.

That being said, it’s just an alright album. There’s nothing particularly wrong with it. With tracks like Translucent Visions, Transubstantiation Into Feces and Non-Functioning Pile of Rot being very good tracks. However, it’s all just a bit boring and mostly forgettable. Enjoyable as hell while it’s on but unlikely to get much in repeat plays. It just doesn’t do enough with this dark and savage style of death metal to really make its mark.

There is some mileage here though. Bastard Grave can play and manage to avoid the staleness that often comes with death metal by varying the tempo on a regular basis. Doom like crawls to ferocious speed with relative ease and rarely interrupting the flow.

Check it out, fans of a harsher and old school style of death metal will feel right at home.
