Album Review: Autopsy – Ashes, Organs, Blood & Crypts (Peaceville Records)

Hot on the heels of 2022’s universally lauded opus, ‘Morbidity Triumphant’, the US death metal greats Autopsy now return for a new sermon of sickness, with ‘Ashes, Organs, Blood & Crypts’, out on October 27th, 2023, via Peaceville Records.

Just slightly over as year since the release of their last album (the excellent Morbidity Triumphant), the garish and guttural horror show that is Autopsy returns with even more gory and grim brutality. Ashes, Organs, Blood and Crypts is every bit the nightmare fuel fans of extreme would want it to be, and it’s more prove that Autopsy are only getting more savage as the years tick by.

It’s Autopsy and they are ripping, tearing, and gutting here. High energy, hectic pacing, furiously heavy, dark, filthy, and mean as anything. Rabid Funeral, Throatsaw, No Mortal Left Alive… the first part of this album will go some way to sating a listener’s bloodthirstiness. Yet, it is just the start as Autopsy are more than willing to drown you in the blood they’re spilling here.

Blood that just keeps flowing as Autopsy take the listener into dark and doomy locales with the egregiously intense Well of Entrails. This side of the band is always fascinating, what it lacks in ferocity, in makes up for in wickedness. Yet, be under no false illusions, this track does have rampaging chaotic energy too.

This level of savagery should be unsustainable, but Autopsy seem to revel in being as ruthless as possible. It’s extremely mean track after extremely mean track, perfected by a band at the top of their game. The title track, Bones to the Wolves, Marrow Fiend, Toxic Death Fuk, Lobotomising Gods, Death Is the Answer, and Coagulation. Autopsy carve out a path of pure death metal devastation as only they are capable of.

It’s the nuances of their sound, evident across the entire album, that makes Ashes, Organs, Blood and Crypts something worth coming back to time and time again. Even if many of us are still blasting out 2022’s Morbidity Triumphant right now. More Autopsy is always a good thing, but more Autopsy at this level, is the stuff dreams (and nightmares) are made of.
