Album Review: Anoxia – Revel In Sin (Brilliant Emperor Records/Gutter Prince Cabal Records)

Following the devastation left in the wake of their debut EP Languish in Suffering, Sydney-based OSDM unit Anoxia return with their long-awaited full-length album, Revel in Sin. It is out on April 17th, 2025, via Brilliant Emperor Records and Gutter Prince Cabal Records.

No fluff, no nonsense, no relenting, Anoxia promise a refined old-school death metal sound delivered in concise fashion across eight mean and manic tracks that have the power to eviscerate, and that is what we get. Nothing more, and nothing less, and it f**king slays.

It slays because of that one word, ‘refinement’. Not only have Anoxia honed their abilities to a sharp point, but they’ve worked on how they can deliver a bludgeoning style of heaviness that isn’t wholly focused on speed and speed alone. Eight tracks of straight-forward death metal it might be, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t creative moments throughout. It just happens that you have dig around in filth to find it.

Of course, there’s no selling this to a death metal detractor, this is all for the fans of brash heaviness, obnoxious speed, and intrinsic aggression. Those who love their death metal, especially those who love their death metal to be ‘in your face’ and melody nowhere to be found. While this might not sound that appealing, rest assured, it’s one of the strongest death metal releases of the year because of this focus. Anoxia had a vision, a simple one, and worked their asses off to deliver it in all its rotten glory.

The end result is an album that roars. An album that will have those brave enough to listen head banging from track one to track eight. An album that proves there is still so much life in the death metal genre, provided bands put the effort in. Anoxia put a lot of effort in, and it pays off. Revel in Sin will be wrecking necks all year long, and it wouldn’t be too much of a surprise to see it end up in some ‘best of year’ lists come December.
